Wooden Nightmares
Videostate
Wooden Nightmares (2025) is a short AI dreamscape set in a forgotten fairground - a place where joy has rotted, and imagination has been stripped of its power. Here, the rides are not broken, but waiting. A towering totem of carved beasts, demons, and serpents looms over splintered wooden attractions. Inspired by the shadows of Hook (1991), where Peter Pan forgets who he is, and Stephen King’s The Langoliers (1995), where time and meaning are devoured behind you, Wooden Nightmares is both a dark fantasy and a metaphor for what happens to creativity when we grow older and lose our inner balance. The world was crafted through a combination of Midjourney image generation, splintered wood textures, and layered post-processing in Topaz Labs. Movement was added with MiniMax and Kling AI, bringing the carved creatures to life in unsettling ways. The soundtrack, created by immersive entertainment composer Lorenzo Braun (DefQon.1, Thunderdome, and multiple theme parks), blends haunting music with visceral sound design — squeaking wood, groaning structures — pulling you into the heart of the fairground.

CTHULHU – LOST TO THE TIDES (2025). A short AI film by Jan-Willem Blom Genre: Cosmic Horror | Runtime: 3,5 min | Format: AI-Powered Watercolor Realism Synopsis: Exactly 100 years after the events in H.P. Lovecraft’s The Call of Cthulhu (1925), a lone sailor returns to the edge of memory, myth, and madness. CTHULHU – LOST TO THE TIDES is not a remake or a sequel, but a quiet echo - imagined in the cracks of the original story. Through surreal, painterly visuals and a haunting original sea shanty, the film explores what happens when the past refuses to stay submerged. Creative Direction: Set in an ambiguous time - it could be 1926 or 1997 - the story is left open to interpretation. Visuals blend AI-generated watercolor realism with cinematic symbolism: guitars become ships, strings become ropes, and memory becomes myth. The film is structured around an original mournful song, anchoring the emotional rhythm and guiding the viewer through layers of sorrow, memory, and cosmic dread. Themes: The weight of disbelief The echo of trauma The vast, uncaring sea What stories leave behind Credits: Created by: Jan-Willem Blom Produced by: VIDEOSTATE Sound Design & Mix: Wolter Rebergen

Spec ad for Monster Energy - if you see a giant caffeine-fueled beast sprinting through your city… do not engage! So… turns out AI is really powerful. What started as a fun Monster Energy spec ad for the hashtag#SaturdayMonsterChallenge took an unexpected turn… I generated the initial visuals with Pimento, upscaled them using Topaz Labs, and stitched it all together in Adobe Premiere. But as I was refining the energy effects in After Effects… strange things started happening. My neighbor, who was casually sipping on a Monster, suddenly got a crazed look in his eye. At first, it seemed like a joke… until he bench-pressed his Tesla. If you hear loud roars and see green lightning, do not approach. Also, if Monster Energy is reading this… my bad. Happy April 1st! The Phoenix and the Serpent (2025)

A cosmic tale of balance. A mythology on the story behind stories. Ever since I was a kid, I was mesmerized by the movies in my local video store—studying the artwork, reading every synopsis. I even knew films inside out before I had seen them. Franchises always fascinated me. In sci-fi and horror, stories never truly ended. Even when the villain was defeated, it was only a temporary strike—a moment to regroup in purgatory before returning stronger. That idea—the belief that all stories are governed by a cosmic balance—had been forming in my mind for years. But it wasn’t until the Saturday Monster Challenge on Linkedin sparked a new train of thought that everything clicked into place. From there, The Phoenix and the Serpent took shape as a mythology built around the Charm monster theme. Today, I’m proud to share it with you. Dedicated to my grandparents (94 and 92), who took me to the cinema in the early ‘90s and taught me the magic of storytelling.

Paris 1880. Christine Daaé, a talented young soprano, receives a cryptic invitation to perform at the esteemed Paris Opera House. Despite her apprehension, she is drawn to the allure of the stage and accepts the offer. Upon her arrival, she is greeted by an atmosphere shrouded in mystery, where whispers of a phantom haunting the opera house linger in the air. As Christine rehearses for her performance, strange occurrences plague the theater, leading her to suspect that there is truth to the rumors of the phantom's presence. Haunting melodies echo through the corridors, and eerie masked figures lurk in the shadows. Driven by curiosity and a desire to uncover the truth her friend Raoul delves deeper into the secrets of the opera house, unraveling a sinister history. As the night of her grand performance approaches, she finds herself ensnared in a web of deception and danger, where the phantom's presence grows ever more palpable. Tonight, the stage belongs to Darkness. In "Phantom of the Opera: Masquerade," Christine must confront the darkness that lurks within the opera house and uncover the phantom's true identity before it's too late. With its blend of mystery, suspense, and Gothic atmosphere, this chilling tale offers a fresh twist on two classic stories of obsession and desire. This work is an artistic reimagination of Gaston Leroux's 'The Phantom of the Opera' and Bram Stoker's 'Dracula'. The film is guided by the sinister classical masterpiece 'Danse Macabre' by Camille Saint-Saëns. I found it an ultimate fit for this work.

The Cursed Chronicles (2024)

What do you get when you crossbreed 4 classic horror movies and 1 iconic Disney opening sequence? The Cursed Chronicles. The visual style is heavily inspired by the intro of ‘Belle and the Beast’. One of the best movie openings ever. The stained-glass windows that narrates the backstory of the prince's transformation into the Beast and the conditions of the curse. Through complex artwork and symbolism, it is visually striking and narratively significant part of the film. It sets the tone for the film's fairy tale ambiance but lays the foundation for the story's central conflict and themes. So in respect to that; I choose stained glass as my storytelling mechanism. ‘The Cursed Chronicles’ is a re-imagination and love letter to the Universal Studio's Monsters from 1930s. The very first movie franchise and 4 legendary monsters that each bear the burden of a unwanted curse. Full length story in the works. Tools used: ChatGPT (prompts + script) Haiper (stained glass artwork) AfterEffects (broken glass animations) Magic.io Wondershare (upscale) Adobe Premiere (edit) Envato Elements (music + SFX).

'Night of the Living Dead: Requiem' (2024) reimagines the legendary story of a zombie siege in a forsaken farmhouse. As the survivors face the undead, they find themselves drawn into a haunting requiem—a song that reveals their inner fears and fleeting hopes. The zombies too, seem to move in rhythm with the inevitable march of death. Ben, Barbara, and the others must fight not only for survival but against the existential weight of their own downfall, as each note underscores the fragility of life. Background info: As a massive horror fan, I’ve always been drawn to 'Night of the Living Dead'. I'll never forget that first viewing experience as a young teenager. As 'Night of the Living Dead' is in the public domain, it felt right to honour this influential classic, and introduce an emotional layer. As a Requiem traditionally serves as a mass for the dead, I felt that this concept mirrored the characters' struggle - alive or undead. This project is my tribute to George A. Romero’s vision, blending horror and music to deepen the emotional impact of the story. It’s a reflection on the fragility of humanity yet the powerful choices we make when life throws us unconventional situations.
